UK AOC Newsletter - December 2009

The President and Board of Directors of the UK Chapter extend their Season’s Greetings to all members and their families   and wish you all a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year.

 ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

The Annual General Meeting of the UK Chapter will be held in the Royal Air Force Club, London, on Tuesday 2 February 2010. All AOC members are encouraged to attend this excellent opportunity to meet the UK Chapter President and the UK Chapter Board, to hear a report on the Chapter’s activities and its financial health and to help shape its future. The AGM will be followed by a hot and cold finger buffet reception at no charge to members. If you wish to attend the AGM, please complete the proforma attached and return as shown.

MOD DE&S AIR PLATFORM PROTECTION SEMINAR, ABBEY WOOD

This year’s Defence Equipment & Support Air Platform Protection seminar - “A Joint Approach to Air platform Protection” - was held on 3 November. The Seminar was very well attended with most seats in the large lecture theatre filled. The Chapter was made especially welcome by the organiser, Squadron Leader Tim Gosling, who asked for a show of hands of AOC members and of UK Board members and found that both were very well represented.

The presentation programme was well up to its usual high standard with perhaps more of an international flavour this year. Our very own Royal Air Force representative Board member, Wing Commander Dave Appleby, spoke on EW developments in MOD where he is currently the sole EW desk officer in the operations area. Apart from the programme itself, the Seminar was a great opportunity to meet and network with friends and colleagues and Abbey Wood provided excellent refreshments throughout the day. AOC Board members took the opportunity to hand out UK Chapter flyers to potential new recruits as part of our continuing effort to attract new blood. A big thank you to the management at DE&S who enabled this Seminar and in particular to Tim Gosling for his excellent job on the day and for the past five or so Seminars to which he has invited UK Chapter members. As Tim is about to move on, we can only hope that his successor is equally EW and AOC minded.

AOC MEMBERSHIP RENEWALS

A polite reminder for some members. All UK Chapter membership applications and renewals must be effected by individuals direct with HQ AOC in the USA rather than through the UK Chapter Membership Secretary. These transactions may be completed online at the corporate web site: www.crows.org. Membership fees are determined by HQ AOC, in US dollars, and will be billed to members' debit/credit cards accordingly.

ELECTRONIC WARFARE SYMPOSIUM, SHRIVENHAM

This year’s classified EW Symposium, held in collaboration with the AOC UK Chapter, was held at the Defence Academy on 2-3 December. Professor Richard Ormondroyd of the Defence Academy has reported that the feedback from delegates for this year's event was very good indeed. The vast majority of attendees thought that the wide range of papers was very good, the mix of scientific papers was just about right and that this breadth was why the Symposium was so special.

Everyone liked the operational papers - all of them – and for this we must thank our President, John Clifford, for arranging four speakers with pertinent operational experience. The cry for next year's event is 'please give us more operational papers - from all the three arms'. Quite a few delegates wanted more time being devoted to this aspect of the Symposium. However, it will be very difficult to fit in all the required papers within two days and still include some time for reflection or summary.

Overall, the feedback was very positive and indications were that this year's event was an overwhelming success.

AOC UK CHAPTER CHRISTMAS DINNER 2009

Forty-one members and guests attended the Christmas Dinner in the Royal Air Force Club on 11 December and dined on a terrine of smoked salmon and prawns with quail’s egg followed by pheasant in mulled wine sauce. It was a splendid, convivial evening as usual and we were especially delighted to welcome some new faces to the dinner. If you missed this year’s dinner - or remembered too late in the day - then please read the next news item!

A LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

It seems only a short time ago that some of us met up in the RAF Club for the 2008 UK Chapter Christmas Dinner. And now it’s here again! If you haven’t booked for the party on 11th December there may still be time - depending on when you receive this of course! At £38 a head it is excellent value and a good way to get the Christmas season off to a great start. There are some pretty good hotel deals around in London at the moment too. If you receive the Newsletter after the 11th and didn’t attend the Dinner, then you missed a great party so start planning for next year now!

Next week sees the 5th Classified EW Symposium at the Defence Academy, Shrivenham. As our UK Chapter contribution to the event which we co-sponsor, I have arranged for four military speakers on the morning of Day 1: one from 14 Signals Regiment (EW), two from Y Squadron Royal Marines and one from the new EW Division of the US Army out of the Pentagon. All have very recent operational experience of EW in Iraq and/or Afghanistan. They will be followed by some great speakers from academia and industry. It should be a good Symposium and I hope to see you there. While there we must also try to recruit new AOC members.

It only remains for me to wish all of you the best Christmas and New Year possible with health and happiness ahead for you and your loved ones. I suppose many of us will also reflect on the year behind and that to come and on the many men and women deployed operationally on behalf of the UK and our Allies. Here in Clifford Towers we will certainly be lifting a glass to “Absent Friends”.

Cheers, John

 John Clifford OBE
