Elections
As stated in the last newsletter, nominations for the post of President
of the UK AOC need to be returned to the Chairman of the Nominations
Committee by 31 October 2004. In the event of multiple nominations a
postal ballot will be held with the result being declared on 31 December
2004.
A nomination form is on the Organisation
page.
Symposia
The next symposium is the 41st Annual Convention in San Diego from
17-20 October. It looks like it is Homeland Security top heavy again, but
San Diego is a very nice venue so why not go and meet your partners in
crime?
There will be an AOC sponsored conference “EW/IO Support to the Warfighter”
which will be held at MCC HQ Northwood on 17-18 November. The conference
will be classified NATO SECRET. Details are on the main website at
crows.org. Northwood is
probably not as exciting as San Diego but it’s closer and marginally
cheaper, so why not come along?
It is unlikely that we will be able to hold a classified symposium in
2006, because we will be hosting the European Convention, but this will be
dependent on the venue selected by AOC HQ.
Visits
The visit to HMS COLLINGWOOD took place on 22 September; twenty members
attended and had an entertaining and interesting day. The level of
presentations was excellent and the enthusiasm of the presenters with
their recent experience of hostilities was outstanding. Special thanks go
to our Canadian Exchange Officer host, Lt Cdr Ernie McMeil, for escorting
us throughout the day and giving us an insight into coalition operations.
Nobody disgraced themselves on the Bridge Simulator by being sea sick, but
a few were close. I still don’t believe you can 360 degree roll a Nimrod
at that height over a Frigate.
Our AOC Fleet EW Effectiveness Award was presented to HMS ALBION during
the visit. Our President, Treasurer and Jim MacCulloch escaped to Whale
Island for the presentation. An extract from the citation is given below.
HMS ALBION’s EW sub-department have given an outstanding performance in
the first year of the ship’s commission. Working at a level and pace far
beyond that normally expected of a ship’s team they have been instrumental
in the set-up of the largest CSS suite afloat in the Royal Navy. They
worked tirelessly alongside civilian agencies to progress system knowledge
and never shirked from their core EW skills, regularly submitting
comprehensive UAT radar intercept returns which have significantly
improved input into the DEWDB.

The proposed visit to the EWTF BAE Systems Warton on 8 December has now
been postponed until January 2005. However, we are hoping to substitute a
visit to RAF Waddington. More on that in next month’s newsletter.
Reunion
There might just be time to apply for the 360 Squadron Reunion dinner,
which will be held in the Officer’s Mess at RAF Wyton on 16th October
2004. For further details contact Kitty Stephens at
kitty.stephens@virgin.net
who is standing in for Lt Cdr Pat Broster.
Mike Thurbon
The death of Wg Cdr Mike Thurbon was reported in the July newsletter,
together with a request that anyone who wished to give a donation should
do so to the Thames Valley Hospice. At that time we did not have the
address of the Hospice which is given below.
Thames Valley Hospice, Pine Lodge, Hatch Lane, Windsor Berks SL4 3RW.
